Bradford City’s Nahki Wells has ruled himself out of Bermuda’s upcoming Digicel Caribbean Cup qualifying commitment. The 22-year-old striker has opted not to represent his country during next month’s tournament in Haiti but is confident that his Bermuda team-mates can get the job done in his absence.“I am unavailable for that trip,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.“This is a big season for me and I’m sure Bermuda can cope well without me.”Wells came on in leaps and bounds during his debut campaign with City last term, netting 12 goals that included a memorable hat- trick against Northampton Town.He now looks set to earn a new improved contract with the League Town club who are keen to lock down the striker in a bid to ward off interests from bigger clubs.Among the bigger clubs believed to have shown interest in the Bermudian are Premier League Reading and Championship side Charlton Athletic.Claims that Sheffield United offered $100,000 for Wells have been dismissed by City.Meanwhile, Wells opened his scoring account for the new season in City’s 3-1 away loss to Gillingham at MEMS Priestfield Stadium at the weekend. The Bantams’ striker converted from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute just four minutes after coming on as a sub.Wells was bundled over from behind by Gillingham defender Andy Frampton and made no mistake with his spot kick that went in off the upright.Reflecting on the match, the ex-Dandy Town player said the final scoreline was flattering and felt that his team deserved at least a share of the spoils from their first outing of the 2012-13 campaign.“The result didn’t reflect the match at all,” he said. “It could’ve easily been 2-2 or even 3-2 to us but unfortunately it went the other way.”Gillingham prevailed on goals from Danny Kedwell (43 mins, 54 mins pen) and Myles Weston (88 mins) in front of 5,107 fans at MEM Priestfield Stadium.Looking ahead to the new season, Wells has set even higher standards for himself.“I have set a target which is well over what I achieved last season,” he said.Wells also has high expectations for City this term.He said: “As a team we want to be in an automatic promotion place come end of the season.”
