Striker Russell excited by Hood challenge

Antwan Russell (right) has signed for Robin Hood.

Antwan Russell has severed ties with PHC Zebras and joined Robin Hood’s ranks for the upcoming season. The star striker is among a handful of high-profile players that have come on board during the summer transfer period to bolster Hood’s roster.Russell (pictured) was one of PHC’s most prolific goal scorers last season and Hood coach Kyle Lightbourne is banking on the Bermuda International to carry on in the same vein for his new team during the 2012-13 campaign.“Antwan was a top scorer last year and it’s very nice to have him on board,” Lightbourne said. “Hopefully he can continue scoring goals because he has the ability to make something out of nothing and we are definitely going to need that.“He also brings pace and can hold the ball up and is good in the air so his all round game is fairly good and he’s maturing as a person as well. He has really blossomed and is coming into his own.”Lightbourne said Russell had shown lots of enthusiasm and commitment during pre-season training.“He’s been out training to probably every session,” the former Coventry City striker added. “Antwan has great belief in his ability and that’s a big key right there. We are looking for a good season from him.”Russell said he is looking forward to the challenge of playing with his new club.“Whenever you go to a new team it’s a challenge and I’m definitely up for the challenge,” he said. “It’s fun to join a new team and show guys what I can do.“It’s no secret that I am a diehard PHC fan as well as an ex-player.“But I felt that it was just time for me to move on.”Russell is fresh off trials with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto FC and could possibly be invited back for further trials. But when probed on the matter the Bermuda Hogges skipper declined to comment.“I can’t speak on that right now,” was all Russell was prepared to say.Meanwhile, others having joined Hood over the summer are Takeyhi Walker and Robert Wilson from Boulevard, and Roger Lee and Tahj Bell from Somerset Eagles.Among those having parted company with the Pembroke club are promising midfielder Drewonde Bascome who has moved to Devonshire Cougars.Lightbourne succeeded Bascome’s father, Andrew, as Hood’s coach earlier this summer.“Andrew did a fantastic job working with the players he had at his disposal,” Lightbourne said.“Obviously we want to take it on from where Andrew finished off.”Hood finished seventh in the Premier Division and also reached the semi-final of the FA Cup last season.“We are just hoping to be very competitive and try and finish in the top half of the table,” Lightbourne said. “And hopefully we can get off to a good start.“We are going to have our moments in the season where we are probably going to feel like we are up against it and hard to get a result. But we are also going to have good spells.”
