Bermuda’s hopes dashed by Haiti

Haiti 3 Bermuda 1Bermuda suffered their second successive defeat at the Digicel Cup after losing to group hosts Haiti at the Sylvo Cator Stadium.Andrew Bascome’s side, who lost 2-1 to Puerto Rico on Friday, required a victory to keep their hopes of reaching the next stage of competition alive but found themselves three goals down by half-time.The Gombey Warriors did manage to reduce the deficit after the break with second half substitute Jahnai Raynor finding the net in the 85th minute.Bermuda, who started with fit-again Reggie Lambe, went close to taking the lead within the first five minutes with defender Darius Cox firing an effort just wide.Haiti, however, were enjoying plenty of early possession and opened the scoring in the 24th minute to send the home crowd of around 5,000 into raptures.In the 38th minute Bermuda conceded again when goalkeeper Freddy Hall was beaten low to his right, and a minute later Bascome’s side were a three goals down with Haiti punishing some sloppy defending.After the break Haiti continued to dominate although Lambe did mange to force a save from the hosts’ keeper with a long range effort. Lambe saw another shot blocked after a neat passing exchange between the Toronto FC winger and Antwan Russell.Bascome made his first substitution in the 80th minute replacing Damon Ming with Raynor, with the switch paying dividends in the 85th minute when the PHC winger pulled a goal back with a calm finish.Bermuda take on St Martin in their final group game on Tuesday.Puerto Rico beat St Martin 8-0 in the earlier game.Bermuda’s starting XIF Hall, T Burgess, D Cox, K Smith, D Ming, A Manders, A Russell, D Coddington, S Smith, R Lambe, J Barry NusumSubstitutes not used: T Bell, I Coke, J Raynor, C Darrell, D Signor, S Darrell, L Simmons
