Jonte fires Police into next round of FA Cup

Jonte Smith was on target in Metropolitan Police FC's 2-0 FA Cup third qualifying round replay win against Dereham Town at Imber Court

Bermudian striker Jonte Smith helped non-league side Metropolitan Police FC advance in the English FA Cup.Smith, currently on loan from League One side Crawley Town, netted in his team’s 2-0 win against Dereham Town in a FA Cup third qualifying round replay at Imber Court on Wednesday night.Smith took his FA Cup tally to eight goals after putting Met Police ahead for good in the 16th minute.The former North Village youth player rode a challenge in the box before firing home an angled shot from about ten yards that left ‘keeper Andy Wilton with absolutely no chance.Smith, who tormented the Magpies defence throughout the match, nearly added to his tally either side of the half. He was first denied after heading the ball against ‘keeper Wilton’s legs from six yards out before squandering another glorious opportunity.Dereham, who played to a 1-1 stalemate in the first FA Cup third qualifying round tie at home last Saturday, battled on courageously in search of an equaliser.But a goal from Met Police’s Ty Smith in injury-time put the match beyond the visitor’s reach.Surrey side Met Police will face South Park on the road in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round to be played October 20.Smith and his teammates will go into the clash as firm favourites as South Park are one of the lowest ranked teams left in the competition.Met Police are now a win away from advancing in the FA Cup first round proper where they would come up against a league club.Smith, 18, inked a one-year professional contract at Crawley Town last April as a reward for a number of outstanding performances with the Red Devils’ Academy and reserve teams. The son of former national cricket skipper Clay Smith banged in 25 goals in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Wycombe Wanderers in the English FA Youth Cup.Smith netted several goals for the Red Devils’ senior squad during the 2012-13 preseason before embarking on a one-month loan spell with Met Police last month that has since been extended for another month.
