Smith double powers PHC to easy win

Wolves 1 PHC 4PHC Zebras got back to winning ways as they cruised to an emphatic victory over Wolves in this Premier Division clash played in wet and blustery conditions at Devonshire Recreation Club last night.A Shakir Smith brace and additional strikes from college kid Tre Ming and Kevin Lambe earned the visitors a fourth league win of the season in a match they dominated throughout.Smith opened the scoring nearly midway through the first half when he tapped in a short pass from team-mate Lonnie Bascome from close range to give Zebras a 1-0 cushion at the break.The Zebras forward then doubled his team’s lead and his personal tally when he beat the ‘keeper with a left-footed shot from an angle that flew inside the near post in the 53rd minute.The visitors were firmly in control by now and things went from bad to worse for Wolves when Ming drilled home a low right-footed shot that caught the ‘keeper off guard to make it 3-0 around the hour mark.Smith then went from goalscorer to provider when he sent in a cross that was turned in by Kevin Lambe who rounded off Zebras’ scoring around the 70th minute.Wolves sub Derek Brangman pulled one back for the hosts from the penalty spot some five minutes later.Zebras remain third in the standings level on points (13) with leaders Southampton Rangers and second-placed Devonshire Cougars while Wolves, who slumped to their third straight league defeat of the season, remain eighth in the ten-team division with eight points from seven matches.Premier Division action continues tonight at Somerset Cricket Club where Trojans host North Village Rams in what will be a repeat of this month’s Dudley Eve final which saw the West Enders prevail 2-1 after extra-time.Trojans are gunning for a third win of the season against Rams who are fresh off last weekend’s inspiring 3-1 league win against reigning champions Dandy Town.Tomorrow will see league leaders Southampton Rangers host fourth-placed Flanagan’s Onions at Southampton Oval. Hornets are at home to Robin Hood while St George’s Colts welcome second-placed Devonshire Cougars to Wellington Oval.Tonight’s Trojans versus Rams clash will be preceded by the First Division match between Somerset Eagles take on Paget Lions.Remaining First Division matches slated for tomorrow have Crossroads Warriors pitted against Prospect United at Garrison Field, Boulevard at home to Devonshire Colts, league leaders St David’s hosting Ireland Rangers at Lords while second-placed Hamilton Parish tackle Young Men’s Social Club at Wellington Oval.
