Wells shrugs off groin injury in City defeat

Bradford City striker Nahki Wells played the entire 90 minutes in his team’s 0-1 home defeat to high-flying Gillingham at Valley Parade on Saturday.The Bermuda International shrugged off a groin strain suffered during the Bantams previous league match with Fleetwood Town but could not extend his season goal tally that currently stands at 18 in all competitions.Wells, 22, tested Gills ‘keeper Stuart Nelson in the 28th minute after getting on the end of a Gary Jones free kick.Nelson also denied the striker in the 36th and 59th minutes as the Bantams continued to chip away at the Gills defence in search of a way through.Gills striker Cody McDonald eventually broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when he rounded Bradford ‘keeper Matt Duke and rolled what ultimately proved to be the game winner into the empty net.Despite falling in arrears Bradford continued creating opportunities with Wells having a shot from a free kick blocked by defender Adam Barret and strike partner James Hanson placing a free header just wide of the post.The defeat was the Bantams fifth at home this season and tenth overall.Bradford, who slipped from tenth to 12th in the League Two standings following Saturday’s loss, will take on Wycombe and Wimbledon in their two next league fixtures on the road prior to the club’s League Cup final showdown with Premier side Swansea at Wembley Stadium on February 24.The Bantams are the first fourth tier side to reach a major English domestic cup final in 51 years, ousting Premier sides Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa along the way.Elsewhere in the UK at the weekend Bermudian striker Jonte Smith came on as a late sub in League One Crawley Town’s 2-1 away loss to Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.Matt Sparrow gave the visitors a 48th minute lead but the home side hit back via goals from Jimmy Ryan (67th) and Niall Canavan (78th) to claim maximum points.
