Wells bags brace in City win

Bermuda striker Nahki Wells achieved his first 20-goal season in English football when his double strike helped promotion play-off hopes Bradford to a 4-1 win over mid-table Bristol Rovers.

Wells, who scored 13 goals last season but had been stuck on 18 goals for two months prior to the weekend, made it three goals in three days as Bradford kept alive their hopes of reaching the League Two playoffs.

The 22-year old Bermuda international needed just six minutes to reach the 20-goal milestone when he broke the deadlock in the opening minutes with a close range header from a Garry Thompson cross. He then added a second from the penalty spot in the 20th minute to make it 2-0.

Andrew Davies made it 3-0 for Bradford at the half with a headed goal four minutes into injury time. Tom Hitchcock pulled a goal back for the visitors four minutes into the second half before Bradford restored their three-goal advantage with a fourth goal in the 56th minute when Wells set up Thompson to score from the edge of the box.

Wells was substituted in the 79th minute as Alan Connell came on to replace him. The win for Bradford, their third this month, lifted them into seventh place and a point ahead of Exeter in the final playoff place.

Exeter were beaten 4-1 by sixth-placed Rotherham, their third straight defeat which enabled Wells’ Bradford to keep alive their hopes of at least a playoff spot. They are just six points behind Burton Albion in the battle for the third automatic promotion place.

Nahki Wells has scored 21 goals for Bradford this season.
