Trojans seeking new coach

Mark Trott

Somerset Trojans are advertising for a coach for their senior and PDL teams . . . but it doesn’t mean coach Mark Trott won’t be in the post next season.Club president Alfred Maybury confirmed yesterday that the post is being advertised after Trott’s one-year contract expired. It is the club’s policy to appoint their coach on a one-year basis and advertise the post every year. When contacted yesterday, Trott referred all enquiries to the president who confirmed that the Football Committee had begun their search for a coach, though Maybury did not rule out Trott returning to the post if he was interested. That may not be the case, Maybury suggested.“At the last game (FA Cup final) he did indicate to me that that was it,” said Maybury. “When the game was over he told me ‘that’s it’ but I take that with a grain of salt because if you lose a final you might say something like that anyhow. I haven’t had any discussion with him since then and even that was in passing.”Trott took over as coach last year from Mike Corday who held the job on an interim basis two years ago.Trojans had a good season under Trott, winning the Dudley Eve Trophy for the first time in six years last November and then going on to finish third in the Premier Division with a 10-2-6 record from 18 league matches. The team ended the season on a disappointing note when they were soundly beaten 3-0 in the FA Cup final by Devonshire Cougars who won the triple crown for the first time under Dennis Brown, a former Trojans captain and coach.“He did have a great season but did get frustrated in the end,” said Maybury of Trott’s season in charge.Somerset’s ad is inviting applications for the post of coach with responsibility for both the senior and PDL teams. The ad read: “The successful applicant will work under the supervision of the Executive of Somerset Cricket Club and in conjunction with the Chairperson of the Football Committee to manage and administer the football programme (Senior & PDL).”Added Maybury: “We are putting out an ad and anybody who wants to apply can. That was the decision that the committee made, to put the feelers out. To be honest with you my focus is Cup Match so the committee is dealing with that. Usually they deal with it swiftly anyhow, to get their feelers out and see who might be interested.“Whilst they do run stuff by me, I allow them to go ahead and do what they want to do and if I have a problem with it then I’ll tell them. I don’t have a problem with them advertising to test the waters. Whenever somebody’s got the job everybody is an expert, so all those experts can now throw their hat in the ring.”Applications should be forwarded by e-mail to the President at amaybury@gmail.com or mailed to the club secretary no later than Friday, July 5.
