Under-15s fall in penalty shoot-out

Bermuda 1 Guatemala 1(Guatemala won 4-2 on penalties)Bermuda’s bid for CONCACAF Under-15 Championships supremacy came to an abrupt halt in the Cayman Islands on Friday night.The Islanders lost to their Central American rivals in a penalty shoot-out in an evenly contested semi-final clash.Jordan Lambe volleyed Oasgi Bascome’s corner kick into the roof of the net to put Bermuda ahead in the 32nd minute after the latter had a shot crash against the crossbar.But sloppy defending allowed Guatemala’s Francisco Cifuentes to equalise early in the second half to send the match into penalties where Bermuda faltered to suffer their first loss of the tournament.Guatemala forced Bermuda on the back foot from the kick-off with their slick passing game but nearly fell behind when Bascome’s ambitious long range effort beat the ‘keeper only to come back off the woodwork.Guatemala dodged another bullet when Ahria Simons’ cross in the middle was left untouched.But Guatemala’s luck finally ran out when Lambe slammed Bascome’s deep corner kick into the net to send Bermuda into the dressing room at the half with a slim lead.Bermuda tormented their opponents with their pace in the second half only to be undone at the other end by some loose defending that Cifuentes capitalised on to level the scores.The game opened up in the closing minutes with both teams coming close to adding to their goal tally.Guatemala hit the woodwork twice and were also denied twice by the fine goalkeeping of Bermuda ‘keeper Janai Smith Davis.At the other end Judah Chapman, Jai-zel Smith DeShields and Oneko Lowe all went close for Bermuda.Bermuda reached the last four after topping Group A with an unblemished record.Bermuda were due to play El Salvador last night in a third-place play -off match.Bermuda: Yanai Smith-Davis, Ahria Simons, Jordan Lambe, Amar Lewis, Oneko Lowe, Jason Symonds, Jai-zel, Smith-Deshields, Quinn Outerbridge, Aaron Burgess, Judah Chapman, Osagi Bascome.
