Simons bags brace in Youth Cup win

Bermuda international Rai Simons enhanced his growing reputation with a brace in Ilkeston Academy's thrilling win over St Andrews FC in the second qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup.

Striker Simons, who signed a two-year deal with the Robins in the summer, had a hand in both Ilkeston's goals with Tuesday's game ending 2-2 after normal time.

With the Robins trailing 3-2 in the final of minute of extra-time, Simons then scored a dramatic equaliser to send the home supporters in raptures and take the game into a penalty shoot-out.

Ilkeston took the lead through Che Adams on the stroke of half-time after capitalising on the loose ball after an earlier shot from Simons.

St Andrews equalised early in the second half, though, through a Karum Shankar own goal but the Robins replied almost instantly after Simons slotted home to make it 2-1.

The visitors piled on the pressure as they hunted for a leveller and got their just rewards when they equalised in the 94th minute.

They then took the lead in extra-time before Simons' last-gasp heroics ensured the outcome would be decided by penalties.

Simons, who recently broke into the Robins first team, also netted his penalty in the shoot-out which Ilkeston won 5-4.

The Robins will now meet Nuneaton Town in the third round of the FA Youth Cup qualifiers at the New Manor Ground on October 22.
