Goater handed coaching position

Back in the game: Shaun Goater

Shaun Goater is set to take up a coaching post with non-League club New Mills, who play in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier First Division North.

Goater, who returned to England two years ago, has become the assistant manager of the Derbyshire side, who play in the seventh tier of English football.

The former Manchester City striker will be on the bench when the club start their new season at home to Scarborough Athletic on Saturday. However, according to the club’s website, Goater will be unavailable after that until early next month, because of business commitments, by which time they hope to confirm his role on a permanent basis.

Goater has been doing radio and television work, as well as obtaining his Uefa coaching badges since returning to England.

Yesterday, he appeared as a pundit on the Premier League Football Show which appeared on SportsMax 2.

He appeared alongside Glenn Hoddle, the former England player and manager, on the hour-long show, sharing his views on City’s match against Chelsea this weekend. The former Bermuda striker ran the rule over the two teams ahead of the season’s first match between two title contenders.

In 2003 Goater was awarded the MBE for services to sport and young people in Bermuda.
