Bassett delight at his team’s three-peat
CedarBridge Academy won their third straight Bermuda School Sports Federation Senior Girls Knock Out final against Berkeley Institute at a lively National Stadium yesterday.
DeShae Darrell, the CedarBridge striker, gave her side the perfect start with a well-taken goal in the fifth minute, slotting home after outpacing the Berkeley defence.
CedarBridge then doubled their lead five minutes later when a innocuous free kick by Teyah Lindo from just inside the Berkeley half somehow trickled through the fingers of Zahra Gibbons and into the net.
The Berkeley goalkeeper went someway to redeeming her aberration by making a smart save from Jade Stewart, racing off her line to keep her side in the game.
At the other end, Brianna Swainson flashed a left-footed shot wide from an acute angle as Berkeley started to enjoy moments of attacking pressure.
Berkeley got their just rewards on 25 minutes when Jadae Steede-Hill pulled a goal back with a powerful strike from the edge of the area.
After the break, Berkeley continued to ask questions of CedarBridge’s defence and drew level on 55 minutes when substitute Jada Samuels capitalised on indecision between Symira Lowe-Darrell, the CedarBridge goalkeeper, and her backline.
Slowly but surely CedarBridge worked their way back into the game, though, and restored their advantage through Saphyre Hunt who struck the winner on 61 minutes after good work by Darrell.
LeVar Bassett, the CedarBridge coach, said he was delighted with his side’s third cup final win in a row.
“The stadium was packed and I really think the players felt the special atmosphere,” he said. “Hopefully this will be a regular thing and there will be more finals played in front of this type of crowd.”
