Smith makes immediate impact for new side Welling

Have a go: Wells rattles the crossbar in a preseason match for Huddersfield

Nahki Wells and Huddersfield Town made a winning start to their preseason with a 1-0 victory away to non-League side Guiseley.

Wells was part of the first-half team, with David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, giving each player 45 minutes, and went close with a powerful 30-yard effort that struck the crossbar.

The 26-year-old, who finished as Huddersfield’s top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions last season, had previously been on a five-day team-bonding trip to Sweden, where no football was involved.

Huddersfield fielded several new faces against the Vanarama National League side, but it was long-serving winger Sean Scannell who ensured victory in their first friendly.

Scannell scored just before half-time, while midfielder Kyle Dempsey also hit the bar from distance.

The travelling supporters also got an early first sight of club-record signing Christopher Schindler, who cost £1.8 million from 1860 Munich, who play in the German second division.

Five of Wagner’s other new signings, Michael Hefele, Chris Lowe, Ivan Paurevic, Jack Payne and Elias Kachunga, were among the substitutes, while goalkeeper Joel Coleman, a £100,000 buy from Sky Bet League One side Oldham Athletic, started the match.

Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy did not feature, with his season-long loan from Manchester City only being completed the day before.

Huddersfield preseason programme continues with an away match against Oldham on July 16 and a home game against Barclays Premier League side Liverpool on July 20.

They then take on Werder Bremen and FC Ingolstadt on their weeklong tour to Austria.

Huddersfield’s opening Sky Bet Championship game of the season is at home to Brentford on Saturday, August 6.

Jonté Smith also got his preseason campaign under way with a goal for his new club Welling United against Cray Wanderers, the Isthmian League Division One South side.

Smith, who featured for Bermuda in last month’s second-round of the Scotiabank Caribbean Cup, joined Welling United on a one-year deal from Ryman League outfit Lewes, where he scored ten goals in 15 games.

Welling United were relegated to the Vanarama National South, the sixth tier of the English game, last season.

Tomorrow they take on League One side Charlton Athletic at home.

Milan Butterfield, who signed for Walsall last month, will be hoping to be involved in tomorrow’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Norwich City.

Meanwhile, Reggie Lambe scored with a crisp volley in his first game for new club Carlisle United in this week’s 3-2 preseason victory against Scottish Championship side Queen of the South.

He also played 45 minutes in their 5-1 win away to non-League Kendal on Wednesday night.

Freddy Hall will be sharing his knowledge with youngsters as part of Limerick’s Elite Goalkeeping Camps at KOS Park in Bruff along with first-team coach Eddie Hickey.

The first camp will take place from Monday, July 11 to Wednesday, July 12, with the second camp coming a week later between July 18 and 20. They camps are for goalkeepers aged six to 16.

Limerick are 17 points clear at the top of the SSE Aircity League First Division.
