Trott ruled out for England

Thumb injury: West Ham goalkeeper Trott

Nathan Trott’s hopes of making his debut for England Under-19s in tomorrow’s friendly away to Croatia have been dashed because of a minor injury.

The West Ham United goalkeeper injured his thumb while training with Keith Downing’s squad on Monday and has been ruled out of the trip to Croatia.

“Nathan injured his thumb while training with the England squad,” a family source confirmed. “While it is a slight injury he won’t be able to travel with the England squad to Croatia, which is very disappointing for him.”

The former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 goalkeeper earned a first call-up for England Under-19s eight months after signing a two-year deal with Premier League side West Ham.

Trott injured himself just two days after keeping a clean sheet in the West Ham Under-23 side’s 2-0 win away to Leicester City in the Premier League Cup.

The 17-year-old was rarely tested during the match played at Loughborough University, which also featured Bermudian Djair Parfitt-Williams, who had an effort saved before he was substituted early in the second half, as West Ham got their title defence off to a solid start.

Trott now hopes to make a speedy recovery to challenge for a place in the England Under-19 squad for next Monday’s home friendly against Bulgaria.

“Nathan was disappointed not to be able to make the Croatia trip but encouraged he would get another opportunity before next month,” the family source added. Trott signed a deal in January that will keep him at West Ham until June 2018.

• Southampton Rangers face a tricky tie in the FA Cup preliminary round on October 16 when they take on Corona League team, Butterfield & Vallis United.

For the third year B&V United have been the only Corona League team to take up the Bermuda Football Association’s invitation to compete in the competition.

They beat BAA two years ago and Somerset Eagles in a replay last season, both in the preliminary round.

Ten teams went into yesterday’s draw, with Young Men’s Social Club and BAA given byes into the first round on January 15.

B&V United take on a Rangers team relegated from the Premier Division last season, while Hamilton Parish meet Wolves in the opening match of a double-header at Wellington Oval and St George’s host Paget Lions.

X-Roads and St David’s will meet at Garrison Field in the other match.
