David Wagner, the Huddersfield Town head coach, admits he is assessing the transfer market ahead of next month’s transfer window, with American Terrence Boyd, the Leipzig striker, linked with the Sky Bet Championship club.

Uncertainty still surrounds striker Nahki Wells heading into the new year, after the Bermudian recently turned down a new contract offer. However, Wagner, as he prepares for the final game of December at home to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, insists he is happy to continue the campaign with his present squad.

Town are fourth in the table after four straight wins, with Wells ending his goal drought to take his tally to five for the season.

Loan signing Elias Kachunga is leading the Town scoring with eight goals as they make a push for promotion.

Wagner has worked with Boyd in the second team set-up at Borussia Dortmund and may view him as a replacement if Wells is lured away from the club.

Boyd has been scoring goals in the Leipzig second team after working his way back from a knee injury. He is out of contract next summer.

The Bremen-born 25-year-old, whose father is American, has won 14 caps for the United States. He started at Hertha Berlin, before joining Dortmund in 2011. A two-year stint in Austria with Rapid Vienna, who bought him for £170,000 in July 2012, produced 37 goals in 80 games and a £1.7m transfer to Leipzig in 2014.

However, Boyd suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament midway through his first season at the club.

Huddersfield will follow up the Blackburn match with an away game against Wigan Athletic on New Year’s Day.

“If we are fourth in the table after playing everyone else in the division, we have no rush to make signings,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner.

“If something makes sense and will help us, we will try to do it.

“We will have a good look at the market, but with this dressing room, if we do nothing, I am still happy.”

• Reggie Lambe is also hoping for a promotion season after helping Carlisle United — Wells’s former club — climb into the top three in League Two.

Carlisle, the previous leaders, are third in the table on 43 points, two points behind leaders Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle.

Carlisle, who are away to Notts County on Saturday, have lost just one of their 22 league games, but have drawn ten.
