Wells hits century of goals

Century maker: Wells scored his hundredth goal in English football in Huddersfield’s 3-1 win

Nahki Wells celebrated a milestone during Huddersfield Town’s impressive 3-1 home victory over leaders Brighton & Hove Albion in the Sky Bet Championship yesterday.

The Huddersfield striker gave the home side a 2-1 lead ahead in the 36th minute with his 100th goal in English football and eighth of the season.

“I’m happy with the finish but more happy with the result,” Wells said. “Everyone chipped in.”

Wells joined Shaun Goater as the second Bermudian to score 100 goals in English football.

He reached the milestone with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the top left corner after team-mate Tommy Smith and Brighton’s Tomer Hemed had traded goals earlier.

Wells then went from scorer to provider when his cross was spilt by goalkeeper David Stockdale to the back post where the lurking Elias Kachunga buried his header from close range right on the strike of half-time.

Huddersfield’s lead would have been wider at the break had Rajiv van La Parra’s effort from the centre of the box not hit the left upright three minutes before Smith broke the deadlock in the ninth minute.

Brighton, who top the Championship table, by a point over nearest-rivals Newcastle United, were reduced to ten men in the 67th minute after Lewis Dunk picked up a second booking for a foul on Isaiah Brown who was subsequently replaced because of the injury.

Huddersfield went close to capitalising on their numerical advantage late on with Aaron Mooy striking the post from outside the box and substitute Kasey Palmer, on for the injured Brown, and Joe Lolley having efforts saved by Stockdale.

“The boys did fantastic,” said Huddersfield head coach David Wagner, who made nine changes to his starting line-up from the one that thrashed Rochdale 4-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup last weekend. “We must have been uncomfortable to play against.

“We played with high speed, high tempo, on the front foot and were brave enough to be in their face. We totally deserved the result. Brighton have only conceded 18 goals and are top of the league. But what makes me proud is the style with which we scored our goals.”

Yesterday’s convincing victory over Brighton was Huddersfield’s seventh in nine league matches which keeps them fifth, two points behind fourth-placed Leeds, who they play at home on Sunday in a Yorkshire derby which will be televised on SportsMax starting at 8am Bermuda time.
