Wells hoping midweek strike begins goal glut

Teamwork in progress: Wells, below, celebrates his goal with Kachunga

Nahki Wells hopes his goal in Huddersfield Town’s emphatic 3-0 home victory against Norwich City in the Sky Bet Championship on Wednesday heralds the start of another prolific spell.

The Bermuda striker bagged his tenth goal of the season to put an end to a scoring drought that lasted eight games, dating back to a 2-1 away win over Queens Park Rangers on February 11.

“It’s not a great feeling for a striker to go a few games without a goal,” Wells said. “It’s been difficult and I would like to think I’ve done well enough to try and go on a run, get my season going again and propel us to top or second [automatic promotion] until it’s mathematically impossible.”

The 26-year-old scored Huddersfield’s third goal in the 73rd minute with a left-footed shot from an angle and came close to grabbing another six minutes later when a shot with his right crashed against the woodwork. He also assisted in the Terriers’ second goal, scored by Aaron Mooy, that made the points safe. Wells’s strike partner Elias Kachunga scored Town’s other goal.

The triumph over the visiting Canaries snapped Huddersfield’s two-game losing streak and moves the West Yorkshire club back into third in the Championship table.

“We’ve had a bit of a stumble in the last few games,” Wells said. “If we go on a run from now until the end of the season and don’t gain automatic promotion we go into the play-offs in good form.

“That’s what we want to do and I’m sure other teams are trying to do that. That’s our aim, win every game and try and give ourselves a bit of a run like we did a few months ago.”

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner believes Wells and Kachunga’s goals can help fire the club to further Championship success.

“Every victory makes your chest bigger but for a striker it is a little different,” Wagner said. “Of course they are happy when the team perform but they are even more happy when they are on the scoresheet.

“They know I do not judge them just on their goals and assists but on their effort and attitude. And our strikers are extra class in this but their confidence may certainly be a bit bigger than it was before these goals.”

Huddersfield are away to Nottingham Forest in the Championship tomorrow.
