West Ham praise Trott’s England contribution

Playing his part: Trott, left, the Bermudian goalkeeper, celebrates with England Under-19 No 1 Aaron Ramsdale after they beat Portugal 2-1 in the European Championship final in Georgia

Terry Westley, the West Ham United Academy director, heaped praise on Bermudian goalkeeper Nathan Trott who was a member of England’s European Under-19 Championship-winning squad.

Trott became the ninth West Ham player to win the championship as England beat Portugal 2-1 in the final in Georgia on Saturday.

Keith Downing’s side made history as second-half goals from Easah Suliman, an Aston Villa defender, and Manchester City striker Lukas Nmecha either side of Dujon Sterling’s own goal secured a hard-fought victory.

Trott was an unused substitute throughout the tournament but has played his part on the training pitch, his inclusion in Downing’s squad arriving just months after switching his international allegiance from Bermuda to England.

“Nathan was very late in terms of getting clearance to play, but they really like him and trust him so he went straight into their squad,” Westley told West Ham’s website.

“It was very difficult for him to go in and play matches straight away because he didn’t play in the qualifiers because he hadn’t been cleared to play. But England rate him so highly that he went straight into the European finals and they won it!

“It’s a great experience for him and it should have given him the appetite to go on and become the number one goalkeeper in that team. He is highly, highly thought of.”

Westley said Trott’s previous experience playing outfield bodes well for the requirements of modern-day goalkeepers.

“When you look at what goalkeepers are expected to do, his feet are as good as a midfield player’s and his passing ability off both feet scares me sometimes as a coach,” Westley said. “He can just clip the ball out to the full back or drop it into the striker.

“So he has an awful lot of attributes and that’s what England have seen in him, so they’ve put him in the squad immediately and he’ll have gained massively from that experience over the last four weeks.”

Trott signed an initial 2½-year deal with West Ham in January 2016 which has since been extended until 2020.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s final also featured Trott’s West Ham team-mate Domingos Quina who played in all of Portugal’s five matches at the championship.

The 17-year-old forward enjoyed an outstanding debut season for West Ham in which he impressed for the under-23 side, made his first-team debut in the Europa League and was also named in the first team for 12 Premier League fixtures.

“Dom is playing a year above his age, as he is an under-18, but Portugal have skipped him a year,” Westley said.

“To have won the under-17s and then lose narrowly in the under-19s final the following year shows what his country think of him.”

Trott and Quina will both have a week off before returning for preseason training next Monday, when they will join either the first-team squad for the trip to Germany and Iceland, or the under-23 group travelling to Slovakia for two preseason matches.

Huddersfield Town maintained their unbeaten preseason record with a 3-1 victory away to Sky Bet League One side Bury on Sunday.

Goals from summer recruits Steve Mounie and Tom Ince overturned former Town player Jermaine Beckford’s early second-half strike before Elias Kachunga coolly converted a late penalty.

Town’s Bermudian striker Nahki Wells was not in the squad.

Huddersfield’s preseason preparations continue today with a friendly away to Germany’s Sandhausen before facing Championship side Barnsley on Saturday.
