Wells told he is free to leave

Available at the right price: Wells has been linked with Reading

Nahki Wells’s future at Huddersfield Town hangs in the balance after being told by head coach David Wagner that he is free to leave.

The Bermuda striker, who joined Town from Bradford City in 2014 for a then club record £1.3million, is in the final year of his contract at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Wells’s ten goals played a significant part in helping the West Yorkshire side gain promotion to the Premier League last season.

However, since then Wagner has splashed £15 million on strikers Steve Mounié from Montpellier and Laurent Depoitre from Porto and Wagner concedes that Wells’ first-team opportunities will be limited during the upcoming campaign.

Wagner dismissed speculation this week that Reading, who Huddersfield beat in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final, have made a £10 million bid for Wells but has confirmed that Huddersfield will consider serious offers for the striker.

“There has been no bid,” Wagner told The Yorkshire Post.

Incidentally, Wells helped deny Reading promotion to the Premier League, scoring in Huddersfield’s 4-3 penalty shoot-out win in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium in May.

“I admit this is not the easiest situation for Nahki,” Wagner added. “Everyone can see how high the quality is of the strikers we have brought in. We also still have [Elias] Kachunga and [Collin] Quaner who are able to play there.

“This is not the best situation for Nahki and, of course, he is a name that is on the market. We will listen if there is serious interest in him but, at the minute, we want to make sure Nahki is back in training. That should be the case by the end of the week.”

Playing in the Premier League has been Wells’s ultimate goal since he left Bermuda for England in 2010 and after the promotion-clinching win over Reading the striker said he had earned his shot at the big time and backed himself to score goals in the top flight.

However, Wells has missed Huddersfield’s past three pre-season friendlies through an ankle injury, including their 2-1 home defeat against Serie A side Udinese on Wednesday.

Huddersfield are scheduled to depart for a week-long training camp in Austria tomorrow, which includes matches against Stuttgart on August 1 and Torino on August 4, with Wells’s availability in doubt.
