Southampton Rangers posted a convincing victory over Devonshire Colts at Police Field to advance to the next stage of the FA Cup. Although they probably should have scored more in a fairly one-sided encounter, coach Jomar Wilkinson was satisfied with his team’s performance.

“We could have been a bit wiser in possession in some instances, but I thought overall the team played well today,” Wilkinson said. “We’ve been working towards a shutout performance and today that’s what we achieved.”

From the outset Rangers showed attacking intent and it wasn’t long before they took the lead, via a Dante Brangman strike from 12 yards. Picking up the ball on the right side of the box, he was able to beat his man on the outside and fire low into the far corner, putting his team ahead after only five minutes.

Moments later, Brangman was again on his horse for a ball over the top and was smartly pulled back by Mateo Issac to avert the danger, earning himself the only booking of the game in the process. Rangers continued to press and should have doubled their lead in the 20th minute, when a diagonal ball over the top from midfielder Ezekiel Stoneham, was collected by Dakarrie Steede who blazed over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The pressure continued to build, and the second goal eventually came at the half-hour mark, when Koshun Durrant rose unchallenged at the back post to nod home an Isaiah Taylor cross from the right.

The home side’s only real chance of the half came off the boot of skipper Kyle Jones. His free-kick from 35 yards was pushed onto the cross bar by goalkeeper Sean Perinchief, who would later be replaced because of a dislocated finger.

Although the home side seemed to be a bit more settled after the break, Rangers continued to control the game mounting attacks down both flanks. It was only a matter of time before they would get a third goal.

Shannon Burchall finished firmly in the far corner from just inside the box, after a cross from the right was only partially cleared by the Colts defence.

The visitors had chances to increase their lead but the ball was twice cleared off the line and Durrant was denied a second goal as he watched his effort hit the post after latching onto a through-ball from Brangman.
