Wells knock only ‘minor’, insists Dyche

Nahki Wells picked up a minor knock in Burnley's 2-2 training-ground draw with Oldham Athletic on Tuesday, which was the reason for his 70th-minute substitution.

However, manager Sean Dyche insists the injury is not serious, as his £5 million striker returns to fitness after his move from Huddersfield Town in the summer while still recovering from ankle surgery.

“Nahki played in the week and got a minor knock, that's all it was,” Dyche told the Lancashire Telegraph. “The other [recovering players] came through it well.”

Dean Marney played another 90 minutes as he continues his comeback from cruciate knee ligament injury.

“It's the best I've seen him in sense of his sharpness,” Dyche said of Marney. “He's looking more fluid in the way he played and ran. I think that's a big marker because it's a longer term journey for him to come back.”

Two other players, Tom Heaton (shoulder) and Jonathan Walters (knee) are recovering from even longer periods out with injuries.

“Jon is on the road back, he's out on the grass, working actively every day,” Dyche said. “He isn't back with the group yet but he's going well. Tom is a longer term one, but he's going as planned.”

Dyche, who was responsible for taking Wells to Turf Moor, continues to be linked with the Everton job after the recent sacking of Ronald Koeman. However, he insists there is nothing in the rumours, saying he is focused entirely on Burnley.

“It's amazing you're still asking,” he told reporters before their Premier League clash with Swansea City tomorrow. “As I've said plenty of times I am just getting on with my job here.”

When pressed, Dyche responded: “Are you still seriously going down this road? I'm at the stage I've always been at. I've had plenty of speculation, in a good way mostly, and that's part and parcel of everything we've achieved here.

“You get interest, whether it's me or my players. But I'm still here, simple as that.”

Waiting game: Nahki Wells has still to make his Burnley debut since his move from Huddersfield
