Nahki Wells scored as Burnley beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 in a training ground match at Barnfield, Lancashire, yesterday.

The 27-year-old, still waiting for his first Premier League appearance, was one of a handful of senior players selected by manager Sean Dyche to play before the busy Christmas period.

Wells and Jon Walters scored the second-half goals for a team that included Anders Lindegaard, Matt Lowton, Dean Marney, Ashley Westwood, Sam Vokes and Freddie Ulvestad.

Goalkeeper Lindegaard had to make a few good saves to keep the score level in the first half as Sky Bet League One side Wigan proved a good test for Burnley. The best chance of the first half fell to Wells whose shot was blocked after he received a pass from Westwood.

Ten minutes into the second half, Wells found the net, perfectly placing his shot on the turn into the bottom corner from 12 yards. Wells had early switched roles with Walters, taking up a more central position up front alongside Vokes.

Burnley controlled much of the second half and doubled their lead when Walters, who underwent knee surgery in the summer, netted with a downward header.

Wigan pulled one back from the penalty spot after a foul by Lowton, but it was Burnley who remained in control, going close to adding a third when Wells saw his shot saved in the closing minutes.

Burnley will play four games in ten days during the festive period, including a trip to Wells’s former club, Huddersfield Town on December 30.

On Saturday, Burnley are at home to Tottenham Hotspur before travelling to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Boxing Day. Burnley are at home against Liverpool on January 1.

Wells has been linked with a loan move to Championship side Aston Villa, a club interested in the Bermudian before his move to Burnley on transfer deadline day.
