Wade: Bean could face further punishment

Mark Wade, the Bermuda Football Association president, says Shaquille Bean could face further disciplinary action for his violent behaviour after a match between Somerset Trojans and Devonshire Cougars on Monday.

The Trojans goalkeeper was led away in handcuffs and then arrested after an ugly outburst at the end of the Dudley Eve Trophy curtain-raiser at PHC Field.

Bean, who was ejected in the 84th minute for making obscene gestures towards supporters, returned to the pitch after the game, first approaching referee Antoine Augustus before exchanging angry words with spectators.

Security staff intervened only for Bean to offer resistance, with police in attendance having to assist in escorting him away.

Zari Simmons, the Cougars midfielder, was sent off in the 81st minute for a shove on the Somerset goalkeeper.

Wade attended the match, which finished 2-0 to Somerset, and said the BFA will make a decision after it receives the reports from referee and match commissioner.

“I was at the game and saw the entire incident from start to finish,” Wade said. “Those aren't the scenes we like to see at any game. Potentially, there is disciplinary action that will be taken based on the match commissioner and referee reports.

“We await those reports and then any action, so it will be irresponsible for me to comment beyond that.”

Wade said he hopes the incident is a “one-off” this season.

“It is definitely not something we want to see at any game,” he said.

Bean, 25, who was suspended for two games this cricket season for threatening behaviour while playing for Willow Cuts, was involved in a similar incident in a Friendship Trophy match against Dandy Town in 2016. He had to be dragged away by security after a heated argument with opposing supporters at St John's Field.

Police were on hand to defuse the situation and escort the Trojans players to their team coach.
