Smith strikes for Lewes in FA Cup

Jonté Smith was on target for Lewes in their penalty shoot-out win at home to Farnborough in their FA Cup first qualifying round replay last night.

Smith opened the scoring in the 37th minute before the visiting side hit back through Connor Calcutt in the 69th minute to send the tie to extra time.

Lewes won the shoot-out 4-1, with Smith scoring from the spot. The Bermuda striker missed a good chance in extra time to settle the game.

“Great win today, everyone worked extremely hard!” Smith tweeted. “Sorry about the miss, but we're in the next round.”

Smith missed the initial tie, a 2-2 draw, last weekend because he was on international duty for Bermuda in the Concacaf Nations League qualifiers.

He played in the island's 3-1 defeat by Aruba in Curaçao, scoring from a goalmouth scramble to make it 2-1.

The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world. The first six rounds are the qualifying competition, from which 32 teams progress to the first round of the competition proper, where they meet teams from Sky Bet League One and Two.

Premier League and Championship clubs enter the draw in the third round. Lincoln City became the first non-League team to reach the quarter-finals in more than a century after recording a 1-0 upset away to Premier League side Burnley in February last year.

Amar Lewis came on a second-half substitute in Brightlingsea Regent's 4-3 victory away to Cambridge City in the FA Cup qualifying first round last weekend.

The former Dandy Town midfielder replaced Matthew Baxter in the 75th minute, with the visiting side leading 3-2.

Lewis, 19, joined the Bostik League Premier Division side after impressing for Stowmarket Town in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division last season.

A former West Ham United Academy trialist, Lewis represented Bermuda Under-20 at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica in February last year.
