Opportunity knocks in absence of mourners

Sad times: Robin Hood and PHC have had their matches postponed because of the funeral of Mazhye Burchall on Sunday (Photograph by Colin Thompson)

Dandy Town, North Village and X-Roads have the opportunity to take over first place in the Premier Division after top teams PHC and Robin Hood had their matches postponed because of the funeral tomorrow of Mazhye Burchall, a Robin Hood player who died last weekend in a road accident.

Town, Village and X-Roads all won their opening matches last weekend, Town and Village beating promoted sides BAA and Paget 4-1 and 3-0, while X-Roads got by Somerset Trojans in a high-scoring match.

X-Roads, who had debutants Donavan Thompson and Jahron Dickinson score in that win, travel to Bernard Park to meet Village, hoping for a repeat of last season when they claimed all three points with a 2-1 win. It was their second straight win in their first season in the top flight after losing their first three league matches.

This match will be the only Premier Division match on Sunday, as Town play Paget at Southampton Oval this afternoon and BAA host Boulevard at 9.00 tonight at Goose Gosling Field. Both teams are looking for their first wins.

In First Division action, Southampton Rangers meet St David’s at the Oval at 12.30pm, while four more matches take place tomorrow. Flanagan’s Onions are seeking their third straight win when they meet Young Men’s Social Club at Goose Gosling Field. Both teams were relegated last season.

Hamilton Parish take on St George’s at Wellington Oval, Somerset Eagles play Ireland Rangers at White Hill and Vasco meet Wolves at Bernard Park.
