Vasco prevail in match marred by trouble
A Vasco fan was ejected from Bernard Park after calling referee Antoine Augustus offensive names in the match against Young Men’s Social Club.
The incident happened around the 90th-minute mark when Augustus, close enough to the touchline to hear the comments and see the perpetrator, stopped the game and called over two security personnel.
They were asked to remove the fan, who voluntarily left the ground, but not before repeating the offensive name he called the official.
Vasco scored the solitary goal of the game three minutes into stoppage time when captain Ricardo Ponte headed home following a freekick on the left.
However, there was another incident after the final whistle when Social Club player Anthony Purnell, frustrated at remarks which were also directed at Social Club players, had to be restrained outside the Vasco changing room. Referee Augustus intervened to restore calm and was shoved by the frustrated Purnell before he was led away.
Also picking up second wins of the early season were St George’s and Devonshire Colts.
St George’s beat Ireland Rangers 5-0 at Malabar Field where Tre McCallan scored twice, in the fifth and 49th minutes while Sage Paynter and Caylon Wade also netted in the first half to make it 4-0.
Damon Darrell closed out the scoring with a fifth goal in the 89th minute.
Devonshire Colts beat Flanagan’s Onions 4-0 on Saturday while Wolves thrashed Hamilton Parish 4-0 yesterday in the other match.
