Lewis recognised for attacking threat

Impressive season: Zeiko Lewis

Zeiko Lewis has reaped the rewards for an outstanding debut season with United Soccer League side Charleston Battery.

The Bermuda winger has been chosen as the club’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Lewis netted seven goals this term, opening his goal tally on his club debut against Hartford Athletic. He also had five assists.

“It was a great accomplishment and an honour of course,” Lewis said. “My job is to create and score goals, what I have been trying to do all season, and I will continue to do the job given to me.”

The 24-year-old played an integral role in Charleston’s emphatic 5-1 home win over Bethlehem Steel last weekend, which clinched their place in the Eastern Conference play-off as he had an assist and won a penalty.

“It’s a big accomplishment making the play-offs,” Lewis added. “We are the only team to make play-offs every year since the USL Championships started.”

Charleston begin their playoff campaign today away to Ottawa Fury, who finished eighth in the Eastern Conferences. Charleston will go into the match with momentum having closed out the regular season with back-to-back wins over Memphis 901 FC and Bethlehem last week.

“We’re coming off two big wins which have already started to feel like play-offs for us,” Lewis said.

“We took our last two games almost as if it was do or die, which helped us get to the playoffs.

“We have been in the play-off competitive spirit for a week already. We are in high spirits and ready to get to the play-offs.”
