Leverock named in team of the week

Bermuda captain Dante Leverock

Bermuda captain Danté Leverock says that being named in the final Concacaf Nations League A Team of the Week would not have been possible without the support of his team-mates.

The 27-year-old defender was selected after scoring for Bermuda in their heartbreaking 2-1 defeat away to Mexico in Toluca last week.

“It’s always nice to get recognition after all the hard work,” Leverock said.

“It’s an honour to receive such an accolade, but I would be nothing without my Bermuda team-mates.”

Bermuda appeared to have done just enough to retain their League A status against the Gold Cup champions after Leverock and Mexico’s Sebastian Cordova traded goals either side of the half.

However, Bermuda’s hopes were dealt a crushing blow as Mexico’s Uriel Antuna scored a last-gasp winner that relegated Kyle Lightbourne’s team to League B and denied them automatic qualification for the 2021 Gold Cup.

“It was tough to concede so late on and obviously we were all incredibly disappointed,” Leverock said.

“It’s still disappointing not reaching our goal after getting so close, but it will only make us stronger.”

Lightbourne’s side will have another shot at securing a second straight appearance at the Gold Cup when they compete in a play-off next June.

“The objective has always been to get back to the Gold Cup and I’m confident we will achieve that,” Leverock added.

“After March we will know who will we face. Hopefully we will have some warm-up matches in March during that international window.”

Bermuda made their debut at the Gold Cup this summer, losing 2-1 to Costa Rica and Haiti before beating Nicaragua 2-0 in their final group match.

Lightbourne’s side qualified for the biennial tournament for the first time after finishing fifth in the Nations League qualifying standings.
