Elisha Darrell has vowed to build on his maiden hat-trick in top-flight football and is confident he can achieve his objective. The 20-year-old Devonshire Cougars striker netted a spectacular treble to lead his team to an impressive come from behind 3-1 win at home to Boulevard in the Friendship Trophy at the weekend.Darrell struck twice in the first half before completing his hat-trick after the break. The former high jumper, who has represented Bermuda at multiple Carifta Games, has now netted four goals in his last two appearances for Cougars and five overall for the season.Judging by last weekend’s sparkling performance, he is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down anytime soon.“I’m trying to get like Lewandowski,” said Darrell, alluding to Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. “I definitely hope to keep on scoring and get into double digits. I just want to get on a streak.”Darrell, who turned 20 just five days before his masterful attacking display, has adjusted well to Cougars’s preferred formation which occasionally sees him playing alone up top.“I like playing alone up front, but we also play two up front, which I also like,” he said. “I like playing with two up front because we can play off each other.”Remarkably, Darrell is playing football for the first time since high school and only joined Cougars during the preseason.“Elisha actually found us. We were training one night at Devonshire Rec and he came and said ‘look, I want to play’,” Vance Brown, the Cougars coach, said. “So we went through the normal routine and saw that he had some raw talent. We were short in the attacking department and so we gave him a shot and he has come good.”Darrell opened his scoring account in Cougars’s 3-2 win at Southampton Rangers in the Premier Division on September 29 and netted his second in a 2-1 home win over Somerset Eagles also in the league.Cougars will host Somerset Trojans in the Friendship Trophy quarter finals at Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday.
