Hood sink Trojans with three second-half goals

On target: Tevahn Tyrell scored the opener for Hood

Robin Hood ended their run of five straight draws with a comfortable victory over Somerset Trojans in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Goose Gosling Field on last night.

Hood scored three second-half goals through Tevahn Tyrell, Aaron Nelson and substitute Che Brangman to secure their safe passage to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Both teams squandered good chances in the first half, with Liams Evans going close for the home side while Leo Burgess should have done better with an opportunity for Trojans.

It was Tyrell who broke the deadlock on the hour mark when he cut inside from the left flank and fired a low effort past goalkeeper Ajani Albouy-Lovell and into the bottom left-hand corner.

Hood quickly doubled their advantage six minutes later when Nelson riffled in shot from the edge of the box after some neat build-up play by the home side.

Brangman, who replaced the injured Lejaun Simmons in the 27th minute, made sure of the victory when he latched on to a long ball over the top and outmuscled Trojans defender Trevin Ming before slotting home in the 75th minute.

John Barry Nusum, the Hood coach, admits it has been a “rough 2020” for his side but said he could plenty of positives from their improved second-half showing.

“We’ve had a lot of draws that we could have got victories from and the first half was actually playing to that same script.

“We missed a few easy chances which we talked about it at half-time. I said, ‘C’mon guys, just relax, Let’s play a little bit more free and not thing about it so much’.

“I thought we did that in the second half. We were able to get the chances and score the goals.

“It was good to get the second goal, but importantly the third, so we breathe a little bit more.”

Nusum said he introduced a more light-hearted approach to training last week as he believed his players were letting their disappointing run of result affect them mentally.

“We did a lot more fun-based drills in training just to lighten it up a bit,” he added. “We did a lot of shooting drills and I think we had started to lose the fun of it. We tried to change it up a little bit.”
