Devonshire Cougars came away with the spoils after cruising to a comfortable win over bottom team Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field last night.

As he has done so often this season, prolific forward Elisha Darrell led the charge with two goals while Jayon Fox also got on the scoresheet with all the goals coming during the first half.

“We went up 3-0 and it was comfortable, so with the changes [second-half substitutions] I knew we were not going to be as explosive as the first 35 minutes, but I was cool with the team performance,” Kwame Steede, the Cougars coach, said.

Victory did not come without a cost, though, as Cougars captain Zeko White suffered a foot injury in a tackle in the second half and was replaced as was White’s opposite number Liam Evans, who also went off after injuring his right leg late in the second period to further compound the home team’s woes.

Cougars made the most of their chances early and caused problems throughout with their slick ball movement and they also defended superbly with goalkeeper Jerez Eve only having to make one save at the near post to deny Evans.

Always on top Cougars created some early chances but were unable to capitalise until their persistence finally paid off when Jayon Fox, a last-minute replacement for Bermuda forward Lejaun Simmons, broke the deadlock. Hood goalkeeper Timmy Figureido parried Demetre Daniels’ shot in the box and Fox thumped the loose ball into the net.

Darrell squandered a glorious opportunity when he sliced wide of the post after being picked out in the middle by Domico Coddington’s diagonal pass but the towering forward made amends shortly after to double Cougars’ advantage. Fox broke away down the right flank before squaring the ball in the middle where Darrell beat Figureido at the near post.

Darrell then put the match beyond Hood’s reach eight minutes later with his second of the night and 14th goal of the season. The in-form player kept his composure after being released by Coddington’s defence-splitting pass and steered the ball into the bottom corner.

Cougars were twice denied from adding to their tally as Figureido rushed off his line to block Coddington’s effort from point-blank range before tipping his swerving volley over the bar. Figureido was also called upon to save a shot from Daniels as the visitors kept their foot on the gas.

The goalkeeper, who had a good game, also did well to deny Darrell a hat-trick in the second half after palming away the latter’s cross- shot before rushing off his line to block substitute Keitaro Darrell’s shot in the box and keep the scoreline respectable.
