David Furtado, the Young Gunz president, had a huge grin on his face after his team were pitted against First Division Paget Lions during the FA Cup quarter-final draw yesterday.

“I am excited and it looks like the draw is going in our favour,” he said. “It’s an interesting draw and of all the teams, Paget probably would be more suitable for us.”

Shield holders Paget, who beat First Division rivals Devonshire Colts in the first round at the weekend, will host the tie at Southampton Oval on February 12.

While excited by the match up, Furtado is not taking his opponents for granted.

“We are not going into it underestimating anybody,” he stressed. “We are just going to stick to our gameplan and not look any further than the game in front of us.

“We are going to be ready and we will try to shine again. We are just going to play our game and if we stick to the script we should be okay. I have full confidence in my team.”

Furtado’s team pulled off the biggest upset in this season’s competition after eliminating Premier Division side Boulevard Blazers in the first round at the weekend.

“We are still buzzing from that comeback 4-2 victory and all credit is due to my players to dig deep, come back and just surprise the whole island with that result,” he said.

“We were the underdogs and nobody really gave us credit or had heard of us, but we are into the final eight and that is an accomplishment in itself. I cannot be prouder of my guys.”

The remaining quarter finals feature all Premier Division clashes with former winners PHC Zebras, North Village and Devonshire Cougars, who have won 24 titles between them, all kept apart.

PHC, the 11-time champions and last year’s runners-up, will host Hamilton Parish at PHC Field on February 11, while ten-times winners North Village will do battle with X- Roads Warriors at Bernard Park on February 12.

Village were forced to go to extra time in their first-round match against Corona League side Footy Kings and are facing another tricky outing against X-Roads who have hit form lately.

“X-Roads have always given us a good challenge so we are looking to come out with a positive result and get to the semi-finals,” said North Village Board member Tache King.

“We just drew with X-Roads in the league, which cost us our one-point lead at the top, so we are looking for a positive result to propel us into these last games, whether the FA Cup or the league. We are definitely looking to gain some traction over X-Roads.”

Village remain in contention for the league and FA Cup double after having their triple crown hopes dashed with defeat to Zebras in the Friendship Trophy final.

“At the beginning of the season everybody’s eyes are on the prize and we wanted to be triple-crown champions,” she added. “We were in the final and lost to PHC, but we still have the double in our vision and in our minds so we have to buckle down and do what we have to do.”

Three-times champions Devonshire Cougars will host a rejuvenated St George’s Colts in the remaining cup tie at Devonshire Recreation Club on February 10.

A new champion will be crowned this year as holders Dandy Town were knocked out at the weekend by X-Roads.
