Transfer merry-go-round hits Bermuda with 154 players on move

Notable departure: Paul Simons has completed a move from Premier Division champions PHC Zebras to league rivals St George’s

If you thought the football transfer window in Europe was busy, take a look at the one in Bermuda.

In advance of the new season which starts with the Charity Cup on Sunday, a total of 154 players have switched clubs during the initial release period between May 1 and July 15.

The majority of those transfers came in the top flight with 78 players moving clubs.

It has proved a quiet close season for defending champions PHC Zebras, who last season sealed a league and Cup double and narrowly missed out on a second Triple Crown, their first in 52 years, after losing to North Village in the FA Cup final.

Heading into the new campaign five players have left the club which is still coming to terms with the tragic loss of captain Marco Warren, who died after a suspected hit-and-run incident, and without coach of the year Winston Trott Jr, who opted to step down from his position.

The most notable departure is that of striker Paul Simons, who has sealed a switch to Premier Division rivals St George’s, while another interesting name among the departures list is national cricket captain Delray Rawlins, who has signed for newly promoted Paget.

Among the arrivals, Jahiem Iris has come in from Somerset Trojans, while Nathan Furbert has also joined from Devonshire Cougars.

In contrast, some of PHC’s closest rivals from last season have been busier, with Cougars who finished second just three points adrift of the champions, losing eight players including the versatile Chris Caisey, who has departed for Wolves.

In response, the club have bolstered their frontline with the return of Che Brangman from X-Roads, one of eight new arrivals.

Another club to add firepower to its ranks is North Village. While winger Justin Bell, one of six departures, has left for Hamilton Parish, versatile forward Jordan Outerbridge has moved the other way and has been joined by powerful striker De’Andre Wainwright, formerly of Trojans.

Wainwright’s departure is part of an exodus at the club, with 13 players leaving, including Damon Ming who has completed a move to Dandy Town and Nathan Rego sealing a switch back to Somerset Bridge.

The biggest number of departures comes at St George’s, who enjoyed an impressive campaign back in the top flight when finishing third, with a total of 14 players departing.

Six — Kirk Stevens, Vernell Lambe, Mishael Paynter, Jahron Dickinson, Jordan Darrell and Macai Simmons — have signed for relegated Robin Hood, who are losing 17 members of their squad after relegation to the First Division.

Forward Ereico Outerbridge and Adrian Trott have joined Danté Leverock in moving to Dandy Town. National player Liam Evans has moved to North Village, while promising centre half Luke Fulton will also remain in the top flight after sealing a switch to promoted Paget.

There was also no shortage of departures at BAA with the club, who just missed out on promotion, losing 17 players.

Five have sealed moves to the Premier Division with Riley and Jaidyn Robinson switching to St George’s, Tre and Gianni Burgess moving to Hamilton Parish and Damon Armstrong to North Village.

Boulevard have seen nine players leave, with Jahzardae Samuels, Azir Harvey, Jerome Bailey and Giano Liburd all switching to Dandy Town.

Somerset Bridge and St David’s saw a total of ten players depart, with Jacal Minors, Irvon Van Putten, Stuart Wilson, Justin Pitcher and Ankoma Cannonier moving from the latter to division rivals Robin Hood.
