Daion Swan-DeSilva brace keeps North Village unbeaten

Daion Swan-DeSilva struck a brace for North Village to pick up their third straight Premier Division win with victory over Devonshire Cougars on a muddy Devonshire Rec last night.

Swan-DeSilva scored in each half for Village to maintain their perfect start to the season and remain on top of the league with nine points. The only blemish for Kenny Thompson’s side was the late sending-off of substitute Ian Simmons for a second bookable offence.

It was the first defeat of the season for the Cougars after Domico Coddington scored a consolation goal in added time.

Village started on the back foot with goalkeeper Detre Bell the busier of the two keepers.

Once Village had absorbed the pressure, they went in search of a goal. Deandre Wainwright was denied by some super saves by Alexander Ingham.

Village took the lead when Swan-DeSilva scored after Ingham pushed a free kick from outside the box back into play and the Cougars defence failed to clear the ball.

Both teams started the second half slowly. However, the match came alive from the moment Bell used his feet to keep out Coddington’s shot in the 72nd minute.

Swan-DeSilva scored his second with 11 minutes left after a defensive mix-up.

He could have completed his hat-trick but chose to pass to Tre Ming, who blazed his shot over the bar.

Ming’s shooting let him down again as he messed up a glorious goal scoring opportunity.

Trinidadian referee Kwinsi Williams had been lenient with his cards. Simmons was the first player to be shown a yellow for foul play. A minute later, Simmons was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Spurred on by the one man advantage, the Cougars fought back into the game and after Zari Simmons had wasted a chance, Coddington found the target with the last action of the match from a corner kick.
