Ten-man Social Club secure hard-earned point

Crucial strike: David Jones Jr levelled with a little less than 15 minutes remaining to secure his side a share of the spoils

Social Club 1 St George’s 1

David Jones Jr earned ten-man Young Men’s Social Club a share of the spoils with St George's at Police Field yesterday.

The visitors scored with their first opportunity of the game. Allan Douglas flicked on a Amon Simons clearance right into the path of Jarazinho Bassett, who sprinted into space and fired a low effort past onrushing goalkeeper Ryan Evans.

St George’s continued to create chances and went close again as Kurtis Minors picked out Manoj Paynter, but the winger lashed his effort wide of the mark.

A physical first half was largely dominated by the midfield battle, which neither side could truly take control of as the visitors took their one-goal advantage into the break.

Social Club's hopes of taking a positive result from a losing position took a major turn for the worse, when Callon Woolridge was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity when he took down Douglas after the striker was played through by Jelani Carlington just outside the penalty area.

St George's failed to capitalise on their man advantage, despite creating numerous dangerous openings, with Douglas and strike partner Bassett each testing Evans with powerful strikes from just inside the penalty area.

Social Club punished them from a set-piece with around 15 minutes remaining. Brighton Swan swung a corner in from the right, and skipper Jones glanced a header past visiting keeper Jahquil Hill.

St George's thought they had found the winner with two minutes remaining when substitute Drewonde Bascome swung in a free kick from the right flank, and Jelani Carlington headed past Evans, but referee Stefan Maybury cut short celebrations, ordering the set-piece to be retaken.

Bascome this time went for goal himself, but tamely struck his effort straight at Evans.

St George's assistant coach Calvin Dill was shown a straight red after the final whistle for foul and abusive language towards the officials, as frustrations boiled over with the visitors missing the a major opportunity to stay in touch with the league’s early pacesetters.
