‘The sisterhood makes this group special’

Bermuda women’s football coach Naquita Robinson is facing a quandary any manager would love to have.

Robinson’s squad for the crucial Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup qualifying group games against St Vincent & the Grenadines at Flora Duffy Stadium tomorrow and Dominican Republic on Tuesday is stacked with talent and the Bermuda coach has her work cut out to piece together a starting XI from her star-studded roster.

“This is probably the hardest starting XI I have had to select,” Robinson told The Royal Gazette.

“Anyone can start and it’s a beautiful thing. I still don’t have a solid line-up and in past games it was also difficult, but not this difficult.”

Robinson has made eight changes to her squad from the one that represented the island in the previous home and away group matches with Barbados, with Nia Christopher, Micah Pond, Zemira Webb, Thompson and Watson among those having been drafted into the coach’s 23-member roster.

Also among those pushing for a spot in Robinson’s starting XI are overseas-based players Kenni Thompson, Aaliyah Nolan, Trinae Edwards, Jya Ratteray-Smith, Danni Watson and Marley Christian.

With the squad getting used to the new arrivals this week, Robinson has been inspired by the morale of the players on the training ground in the lead-up to the big match tomorrow.

“The vibe among the group is great as usual,” she said.

“This is a special group. The sisterhood makes the group special. The work they have put in, the love and respect they have for each other and the game. The list goes on.“

Bermuda are just two wins away from guaranteeing top spot in League B group c and the opportunity to qualify for the Gold Cup in a play-off against one of the group runners-up from League A. Those runner-up spots are occupied at present by Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Costa Rica.
