Allen the Turkey champ

Stephen Allen powered his way to victory in yesterday’s Turkey Trot 10K, on a new course designed by organisers, the Swan’s Running Club.Allen was kept company in the early miles by Southampton’s Otis Robinson, who is currently living in the Birmingham area of England but who is making a brief visit to the Island. The race route took athletes eastwards along North Shore Road from Dunlop Realty, near the Sea View Gym, to a turnaround just before Terceira’s gas station. This section of the race was into a mild headwind.Allen and Robinson turned together to head westwards back along North Shore to the second turnaround near the West Pembroke school.A good size field of runners and some walkers who were taking part in the race walk along the same course, were by now strung out along the road.At four-and-a-half miles Allen was running into the breeze again as he once more headed east on North Shore towards the finish line at Dunlop Realty. Robinson continued to pursue but by now there was clear daylight between the two leaders.Allen crossed the finish line in 34 minutes and 45 seconds with Robinson around two minutes adrift. A further two minutes behind was third placed Chris Cabral, who claimed an impressive personal best as he ran his first sub-40 time for the 6.2-mile distance.First to cross the line in the women’s race was Christie Dotson.Fastest amongst the walkers was Sheena Young. Competitors praised the event for its likeable course and good organisation.Age division winners:Women: (18-39) Kathleen Moroney; (40-49) Deborah Norman; (50-59) Sharon Craig; (Super Senior) Margaret Burgess-Howie.Men: (18-39) Otis Robinson; (40-49) William Wood; (50-59) Michael Scythes; (Super Senior) Eddie Fisher.
