Watson tips Clarke for Local Male title

Sean Trott will be challenging Darico Clarke in the Front Street Mile Local Male race on Friday.
<I>Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson takes a look at which local runners could triumph in Friday's KPMG Front Street Mile.

Primary School Girls I think this division will be wide open. There is a mixture of athletes in this age group with some having competed in the Cross Country Series and some who have not.Messiah Greaves won the Series and the Cross Country National Championships but does not have the fastest trial time. This could be anyone’s race.Primary School Boys Aaran Jacobs has run away with the Cross Country Series and won the National Championships but again there are athletes in this event who did not compete in the Cross Country Championships so again, this could be anyone’s race.Aaron is going into the race with the fastest trial time and should take the win.Middle School Girls This is going to be a great race as we have the top eight fastest qualifiers who have a chance of winning.Zakiyyah Showers, Quasshie Douglas and Kyrah Scraders have been going back and forth in the cross country event. On the track no one has beat Scraders but that was last year. I think the winner is going to come from one of these three athletes.Middle School Boys This is going to be an exciting race with the top three fastest qualifiers going to be neck and neck.Paul Smith has dominated the Cross Country Series but Jeremiah Steede competed in an older age group in the cross country event.I’m going to go out on a limb and say Paul Smith will win but Jeremiah Steede and David Darrell are going to be breathing down his neck. Any mistake can cost Smith the race.Senior School Girls I believe Taylor-Ashley Bean will win the local race but there will also be Kaley Hook from the US who competed last year in this event and ran away with it. I believe Taylor will give her a run for her money and may be able to pull out the overall victory.Senior School Boys This is going to be a neck to neck race all the way with Shaquille Dill, Trey Simons and Juma Mouchette fighting for the victory.Because Shaquille Dill has the most speed out of the three and had a fantastic season last year in the 800 metres, I’m going to give the nod to Shaquille and he is the defending champion.Local Female This is going to be an open race as Ashley Estwanik has dropped out. It could be anyone’s race but Jennifer Alen and Tamika Williams should be fighting for the victory.Local Male I’m going to give this race to Darico Clarke who has stepped up from the Senior Boys’ division. If he runs a smart race he should take the victory as he has the speed and the distance behind him but Sean Trott or Tony Banks may be able to sneak up on him if he makes a mistake.
