Schools sign up for triathlon challenge

Six local schools will do battle in the maiden Senior Schools Challenge at next month’s Tokio Millennium Triathlon.CedarBridge Academy, Somersfield Academy, Warwick Academy, Berkeley Institute, Saltus Grammar School and Bermuda High School have all confirmed they will enter teams in the event.Teams, made up of boys, girls or mixed, will be tasked with completing the 200m swim, 8km bike and 2km run course, which will be held in Hamilton on June 10. Schools who enter at least two teams will also be eligible to win a cash prize for PE equipment. Evan Naude and Kristyn Tobey Robinson are the defending male and female senior individual champions.The senior individual, junior advanced, and team races will start at 9.45am with a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.The ‘Try-a-Tri’ for novices starts at 8.45am. For younger children, there will be an Individual Junior Racing Bike and Mountain Bike Duathlon at 8am.To register, go online at www.racedayworld.com. Registration closes on Wednesday, June 6. The entry fees are $25 for juniors, $25 Try-a-Tri, $30 junior advanced, $35 senior individual and $50 senior team.Race packets may be collected on Friday, June 8 between 5pm and 7pm at the Waterfront Properties Courtyard off Pitt’s Bay Road. Staff from Tokio Millennium Re will join Johnny Barnes on East Broadway from 7am to 9am today.They will be dressed in Tokio’s company colour of royal blue and will portray the three legs of the triathlon as swimmers, cyclists and runners. Other Tokio staff are getting into the spirit of the event as they will be dressed as cheerleaders and holding signs to promote the triathlon.
