Squash boys team reach final

The Bermuda girls and boys junior squash teams both came away with big wins in their latest matches in the Caribbean Junior Championships in Jamaica.The girls beat hosts Jamaica 3-2 on Wednesday evening, while the boys defeated reigning champions Guyana 4-1 in the semi-finals.In their last round robin match yesterday morning, the girls also beat Barbados 4-1.Under-15 player Tiye Williams lost in three games to the under-15 champion Alyssa Mullings in the first match against Jamaica.But under-19 Alyssa Brewer won her match in three games, bringing the teams back to a tie.Under-19 Alex Marshall then took to the court, taking control early to win the first two games. Her opponent put up a strong fight in the third game, taking the game to tiebreak, but Marshall pulled through for a 15-13 victory to give Bermuda a 2-1 lead.Under-13 Olivia Lindsey came through for Bermuda again with a 3-0 win over her opponent to guarantee the win for the Bermuda girls team.In the final match, under-17 Emma Keane rebounded from a first game loss to win the second, but her Jamaican opponent took the next two to win the match.Starting the boys’ matches against Guyana, under-15 Ryan Hopkins lost in three games. In a spectacular rematch, under-19 player Beau Orchard faced an opponent he lost to in a 3-2 match during the individual competition. But in this match, Orchard earned the win with an 11-9 finish in the fifth game to tie the match scores.The boys gained another point when under-19 Noah Browne’s opponent retired from the match due to a pulled hamstring. Under-13 Dylan Pratt played his opponent from the under-13 finals again, coming away with a 3-1 victory.Under-17 D’Vario Thompson finished the evening’s matches with a 3-0 win.The girls’ team played their last matches of the tournament yesterday morning, finishing strong with a 4-1 win.Under-17 Emma Keane came out ahead in a tense four-game match, recovering from a second game loss to take the next two. Because Barbados conceded the under-19 matches due to a lack of players, Keane’s win sealed the victory for Bermuda.Under-13 Olivia Lindsey faced the runner-up from the individual competition, falling 3-0 to a tough opponent.Finishing up the girls’ matches, under-15 Tiye Williams defeated her opponent in a quick three games.The boys played in the finals of the team round yesterday evening against the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, followed by the awards ceremony to conclude the tournament.
