Bermuda second overall in squash tournament

The Bermuda junior squash team claimed second place overall in the 2012 Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships team tournament in Kingston, Jamaica after inspiring team performances. The boys’ team won their final set of matches 4-1 over the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) on Thursday evening, pushing themselves to the top of the pile, while the girls earned a third-place finish with three team victories in their round robin competition. The team improved on their overall fourth place finish in last year’s junior CASA tournament, falling only two match wins short of defeating Guyana, who retained their title of overall champions from the previous year. The boys swiftly claimed their final victory, with the first three players each finishing off their opponents in three games.Under-17 D’Vario Thompson maintained control throughout his match, winning 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 and Under-13 Dylan Pratt followed Thompson’s lead, winning 11-5, 11-4, 11-2.In his last match at junior CASA, U-19 Noah Browne again faced Kevin Hannaway, his opponent from the finals of the individuals, and claimed a second win.Browne won the first game definitively, allowing his opponent just three points, while Hannaway closed the gap in the second game, losing narrowly 11-9 before Browne finished the match with an 11-7 victory in the third game.Because after these three wins match results could no longer impact the overall team standings, U-15 Ryan Hopkins and U-19 Beau Orchard played best two out of three instead of best three out of five for their matches.Hopkins fell to a strong opponent in two games, losing 11-1, 11-3, while Orchard earned the fourth win of the team match with a three-game victory. He lost a tight first game 11-9, but returned to win the next two 11-7, 11-6.Individual Championships:Boys U-19 final: Noah Browne (Ber) d Kevin Hannaway (OECS) 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3.Boys U-17 final: Nyron Joseph (Guy) d D’Vario Thompson (Ber) 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8.Boys U-13 final: Dylan Pratt (Ber) d Khamal Cumberbatch (Bar) 11-9, 11-3, 11-8.Team Championships — Girls: Bermuda d Cayman 3-2; Bermuda lost to Guyana 1-4; Bermuda lost to Trinidad 1-4; Bermuda d Jamaica 3-2; Bermuda d Barbados 4-1.
