Teenager Tyler cruises to victory in opening game
Bermuda’s Tyler Smith cruised through her first test at the Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tournament at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium today.Smith, who is ranked third in the Girls’ Under-18s Singles Division, always looked in complete control against Alexandria Agee of the USA who she comfortably beat 6-0, 6-2.The 16-year-old will now face USA’s Madison Harrison in the next round of the competition today at 12pm.“I wasn’t expecting anything, I just wanted to go out there and play my game and it was a good first game for me,” said Smith, who received a bye in the first round.“I thought I played pretty good, I just tried to get a rhythm and play how I play and not get too mad at myself when I make errors.“I try not to stress to much because then I start to go downhill I just try to chill.”Prior to today’s win, Smith hadn’t played competitive tennis on the Island since the previous Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Tournament in 2011 when she reached the semi-finals of the Under-18 Division.This time around Smith, who was cheered on by several of her family members against Agee, hopes to go one better and reach the final.“I’m really excited to be back in Bermuda because my parents and grandparents actually get to watch me play,” said Smith, who attends the Bill Adams International Tennis Academy in Florida,“The last time I played in Bermuda was at this tournament two years ago when I got to the semis. Hopefully I can at least make it to the finals this time.”Smith, a former Caribbean Under-13 champion, will have a week to relax on the Island after the tournament before she heads to another ITF world ranking competition in Bahamas.But she will be back on home soil for her debut at the NatWest Island Games next month as part of Bermuda’s women’s team.“I’m excited about the Island Games. I will be competing against mostly adults but it will be fun it’s always fun,” she added.Coleridge Place, president of Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association, believes Smith has matured greatly as a tennis player since the previous Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Tournament“We’ve been proud of all of our Bermuda players so far in the tournament,” he said. “Today we had Tyler on court and she played a fabulous match and the crowd was out supporting her.“I’m very excited about Tyler’s development. She looks to have developed physically and looked to be hitting the ball really solid.“I think Bermuda is in for a treat in the next few rounds.”
