Tennis starlet shines in Colorado tournament

Tennis starlet Daniel Phillips did Bermuda proud at last week’s Little Mo International Tournament in Colorado, Springs, Colorado. The Somerset Primary student finished runner up in the Boys Under eight singles to further underline his enormous potential.Competing in sweltering heat at high altitude at the US Airforce Academy in Colorado Springs, Phillips compiled an impressive 3-1 record. The promising player got his tournament off to a flying start after breezing past Texan Nicolas Trullenque 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round. He then gathered further momentum after getting past Californian Andrew Salu (7-5, 6-2) in the second round.Phillips’ title hopes suffered a setback after slumping to a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at the hands of defending champion Nishesh Basavarareddy (California) in the third round. However, the Bermudian closed out the tournament on a winning note after storming to an emphatic 6-0, 6-2 victory against Adhithya Ganesan in his final round robin match.Basavareddy successfully defended his title while Trullenque rounded off the podium finishers.Accompanying Phillips in Colorado last week was coach and former top player Sam Maybury.Last year saw the top junior player capture glory in the Boys under-eight doubles with Peruvian Ignacio Buse and reach the semi -finals in the singles competition at the Little Mo event in Florida. The annual tournament is named after late tennis star, Maureen Connolly, who was the first woman to capture the Grand Slam of tennis (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) prior to her death from cancer in 1968. She remains the only American and youngest (18) to achieve the extraordinary feat.In recognition of the 60th anniversary of Connolly winning the Grand Slam, tournament organisers have challenged participants to win the Little Mo Grand Slam which consists of this year’s three tournaments.Any player achieving the Slam will receive a six-foot tall trophy and the title of Little Mo Grand Slam Champion.Phillips plans to compete in all three of this year’s Little Mo tournaments to take place in Colorado, New York and Florida. The Little Mo tournaments are for boys and girls aged eight to 12.
