Top seed Tyler marches into next round

Top singles seeds Scott Clayton of Jersey and Bermuda’s Tyler Smith are safely through to the next round of the tennis at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.Clayton, who beat Gavin Manders in the team event on Sunday evening and then teamed up with James Connelly to beat Manders and Jensen Bascome in the doubles, added another Bermudian scalp today when he stopped Alex Cooper 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of 16 match in the morning.Unseeded Bermudian David Thomas had a good start to his singles campaign when he beat Stephen Le Comu of Jersey 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 32.He then followed that up with a second round win over sixth seed Aitor Catchot-Sintes 6-1, 6-6 (5). Tyler Smith joined him into the last eight with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Josefine Nordlund of Aland.There was an injury casualty in a men’s singles match where Jeremy Poggio of Gibraltar twisted his ankle against Scott Weaver of Jersey and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Weaver had won the first set 6-4 and was one-up in the second when Poggio retired.In other early matches Pieter Robinson of Guernsey beat Viktor Enberg of Aland 6-1, 6-0; Paeter Dahl of Faroe Islands beat Nico Robinson of Guernsey 6-0, 6-4 and number eight seed Dominic McLuskey of Guernsey defeated Oliver Broadhead of Isle of Man 6-2, 6-2.Jacklyn Lambert, the fourth seed, is also into the last eight of the women’s singles after beating Elena Snidal of Isle of Man 7-5, 6-3.However, Caitlin Gordon of Bermuda crashed to Joanna Dyer of Guernsey on a third set tiebreak 6-0, 2-6, (0-1).Bermudian Neal Towlson won his opening match 6-3, 6-3 against Andreas Nilsson of Aland while second seed Gavin Manders of Bermuda stopped Carlos Previ-Aliano of Menorca 6-3, 7-5.hird seed Patrick Ogier of Guernsey and seventh seed Billy Harris of Isle of Man also had comfortable wins.In the women’s doubles. Tyler Smith and Erika Bové beat Barker and Tucknott comfortably 6-0, 6-0.Mixed doubles pair Alex Cooper and Tara Lambert went down 5-7, 6-3, (1-0) to Marc Chin and Karen Faragher of Isle of Man, while Thomas and Towlson defeated Stephen Le Cornu and Scott Weaver of Jersey 6-4, 6-4 in a close encounter.Bermuda lost their final match of the evening, the mixed doubles, where Bascome and Bove went down 1-6, 5-7 to Billy Harris and Laura Feely of Isle of Man.
