Rain delays Phillips final showdown

Young tennis player Daniel Phillips will have to wait a little longer for his final showdown with defending champion Nishesh Basavarareddy at the Little Mo International Tournament in Forest Hills, New York.The unseeded Phillips had been scheduled to lock horns with top seed Basavarareddy today for the boys under-eight singles title at the West Side Tennis Club.But rain prevented any play on court forcing organisers to reschedule the final for tomorrow.The Somerset Primary student reached the final after recording convincing wins against second seed Declan Galligan (6-1, 6-0), third seed Andrew Hayward (6-0, 6-0) and Mikkel Zinder (6-2, 6-2) playing on the clay surface at the former US Open facility.Phillips finished runner-up to Californian Basavarareddy at July’s Little Mo event in Colorado and has teamed up with the latter for doubles play at the ongoing tournament in New York.Top seeds Phillips and Basavarareddy were due to meet second seeded Rohan Patel and Andrew Salu in the semi finals of boys under-eight doubles today.Meanwhile, Phillips’ sister, Imani, has reached the final in the girls under-11 doubles with partner Marietta Kintiroglou.The pair were due to face Fiona Arrese and Millie Elsborg in the final today.Imani reached the semi-final in the girls under-11 singles where she lost (6-1, 6-0) to number one seed Elsborg of Denmark.
