Bermuda’s girls and boys teams pulled out all the stops to earn a place on the podium at the ITF/GSDF English Caribbean Wilson Under 12 COTECC Team Championships in Jamaica today. Both teams finished third in their respective divisions after overcoming St Lucia and Guyana in the consolation finals to qualify Bermuda for next month’s Masters Under-12 Development Tournament in Mexico.Bermuda’s boys team of Ricky Mallory III and Ben Lines prevailed against St Lucia’s Nathan Francis and Adriel Bouquet 2-1 while the girls team of Imani Phillips and Kaylah Ming got past Guyana’s Afruica Gentle and Kalyca Frazier by the same scoreline at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston. Both three-match series were decided by super tie-breaks (first to ten points) in the doubles matches.Mallory breezed past Francis 6-0, 6-1 in his singles match while Lines came up short in a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Bouquet.Mallory and Lines eventually prevailed 2-6, 6-0 (10-8) in a hard fought doubles match to clinch the series and earn a place on the podium. In girls’ singles play, Phillips cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win against Frazier while Ming went down 6-1, 6-1 against Gentle. But there would be no denying Phillips and Ming in the deciding doubles match which they won 6-2, 3-6, (10-8) to clinch the series and finish third in the girls’ division.“I am as proud of these young warriors as I’ve ever been in my entire coaching experience,” an elated Bermuda coach Steve Bean told The Royal Gazette. “They are great representatives of our country.”Bean added: “What a team effort from our players. What I appreciate most was that they listened to instruction and followed them to the best of their ability.”Earlier during the tournament Bermuda’s boys’ team went undefeated in round robin play to finish atop Group A.
