Bermuda rebound with Antigua win

Smash hit: Manders won in the singles and doubles for Bermuda in Uruguay yesterday

Bermuda rebounded from a 3-0 defeat by Jamaica on Monday, by beating Antigua & Barbuda 2-1 in the Davis Cup yesterday.

Jenson Bascome and Gavin Manders beat Carlton Bedminster and Jody Maginley 6-4, 6-1 in the deciding rubber in their Group III America’s Pool B clash at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Manders won the day’s first encounter for Bermuda, beating Cordell Williams 6-2, 6-1 in little more than an hour, However, Maginley evened the tie for Antigua when he beat David Thomas 6-1, 6-1 in only 53 minutes before Bermuda won the crucial doubles clash.

On Monday, Jamaica proved too good for Bermuda. Manders lost 6-3, 7-5 to Jacob Bicknell; Thomas was beaten 6-0, 6-1 by Rowland Phillips before Bascome and Jovan Whitter went down 6-4, 6-2 to Bicknell and Phillips in the doubles.

Bermuda face Honduras, who beat Antigua 3-0 on Monday, in the Uruguayan capital today and Puerto Rico tomorrow. Puerto Rico began their campaign impressively with a 3-0 win over Jamaica yesterday.
