Tyler Butterfield failed to finish the Raleigh Ironman 70.3 Triathlon — his first triathlon since the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, in April.

Butterfield exited the water in fifth, completing the 1.2-mile swim in 26min 31sec, climbing a position during the 56-mile bike in 2:09:15, and was just two seconds off third when he withdrew.

The 35-year-old pulled out of the Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby because of a calf niggle, opting to compete in the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race instead, finishing second behind top local cyclist Dominique Mayho.

Jackson Laundry, of Canada, won the elite men’s race in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 3:55:23, almost more than two seconds slower than Butterfield’s winning time of 3:53:22s in last year’s race.

Several local amateurs also competed in Raleigh with Alison Petty eighth in the women’s 35-39 age category in 5:31:25 after the fastest swim in her age group, and Phil Mace, tenth in the men’s 40-44 in 4:54:03.

Corey Brunton placed eighteenth in the men’s 30-34 age group, while Dianna White placed 27th in the female 35-39 age group in 6:22:17.

Steve Petty, the Bermuda Triathlon Association president, was disqualified for an incomplete run course.
