Tobiah Goodchild reaches quarter-finals in Costa Rica
One of Bermuda's top junior tennis players, Tobiah Goodchild, is on an unbeaten run in Costa Rica.
Teenager Goodchild has asvanced to the quarter-finals of the Cotecc (Central American & Caribbean Tennis Confederation) Under-14 San Jose Bowl after a string of fine dislays starting in the qualifying tournament last week.
In his first ever ranking tournament, Goodchild won his qualifying round-robin section after going undefeated in his three matches to gain entry into the main draw, which started this week.
On Tuesday, Goodchild first prevailed against local player Daniel Esquivel of Costa Rica. In a tough match lasting more than an hour and a half. Goodchild started well and took the first set 6-2 thanks to some aggressive play but was forced to rally from 2-4 down in the second set.
Showing resilience in the face of adversity, Goodchild racked up the next four games to take the match and make it through to the quarter-finals, where he will play the winner of Costa Rica’s Andrea Rucavado or Guatemala’s Antonio Martinex, who is seeded three.
The Bermudian youngster will also feature in doubles action later this week when he partners Samuel Bryce of Costa Rica.
