Swimming starlet Madelyn Moore capped an outstanding performance at this year’s Carifta Swimming Championships by claiming a second gold medal in Jamaica yesterday.The Warwick Academy student made her presence felt yet again in the pool to win the girls’ 11-12 50 metres freestyle final at the National Stadium Pool in Kingston.Moore, 12, lived up to her billing as the top seed after touching the wall first in a blistering time of 28:12 which is a new personal best and national age group record.“I was pretty confident going into the final because this is one of my better events,” she said. “The competition was hard and it was a very close race. I was just happy I got a PB and another gold medal.”Moore was Bermuda’s top performer in Jamaica having also won gold in the 50 metres backstroke, silver in the 100 metres backstroke and bronze in the 100 metres freestyle. Her times in the 50 metres backstroke (32:84) and 100 metres backstroke (1:14.10) are both new national age group records.The promising swimmer attributes the hard work she put into her preparations in the lead up to the regional junior swimming championships as the key to her success in the Caribbean.“I would not have been able to achieve this had I not trained as well as I have,” she said. “I think I did really well and I have to thank my coach (national coach Ben Smith) for helping me get here.”National coach Smith believes the best is yet to come from Moore.“Madelyn had some really good results but we can expect even better from her in the future,” he said.“She’s still learning how to swim a lot of the races so we can look forward to her improving and getting even better results in the future. She’s still young and learning how to carry a heavy load of events and being able to perform under pressure.”Meanwhile, also ending the pool competition at this year’s Carifta Swimming Championships on a high was current Junior Male Athlete of the Year Jesse Washington who won the silver in the boys’ 13-14 50 metres freestyle final after finishing in a three-way tie for second in a time of 25:29.Earlier in the day the Warwick Academy student set a new national age group record (25:21) en route to qualifying for the 50 metres freestyle final as the top seeded swimmer.Washington, 13, has enjoyed another stellar Carifta Swimming Championships this year having also won the gold medal in the 100 metres freestyle in a new national age group record time of 54:71 and bronze in the 100 metres butterfly final in a personal best time of 1:01.17.He also set new national age group records in the 50 metres butterfly (27:02) and 200 metres freestyle (2:02.83).Bermuda’s swimmers have so far won seven medals (three gold, two silver and two bronze) at the Carifta Swimming Championships.Teenaged swimmer Vaughn Rowse is the only local swimmer in action today. The Carifta debutant is competing in the inaugural open water 5K that will bring the curtains down on this year’s regional championships.
